When Founder and CEO of Vixen® Spa Inc, Karen Dixon was asked about what inspired her to become an Entrepreneur, she talks about her journey and how Vixen® became a reality.

At a very young age, her dream was always to build her own business.  She loved being creative and thinking through possibilities and inventions that would make her feel that the work she was doing was rewarding.  She always had a passion for the beauty industry and wanted to influence others through the power of positivity, building relationships, and overall wellness.

At the age of 8, she wasn’t using transparent tape to wrap holiday gifts, instead, she was using it to create fancy nail extensions that adhered to the natural nail bed.  Not the most durable invention at the time but as a child, she believed it was the next best thing to having long nails for which her friends thought would be impossible at such a young age. She would attempt to sell them at the neighbourhood parks and playgrounds for .25 cents a set in hopes of growing her new invention.  Young and naive, she was eager to make a sale but not for the money.   She just wanted to create excitement amongst her friends.  She felt her creation made the impossible, possible.   Soon enough, her beauty invention was a hit amongst her friends and classmates.  Fast forward to the age of 15, she continued to grow her passion in nails, as well as hair and offered her services to friends and family at no cost.  She simply loved what she did and was enthusiastic about strengthening the relationships around her.

After high school, she pursued a Business Management Diploma and realized even more that building her own business would be the ultimate goal for her. She obtained a deep knowledge of the world of Nails and Esthetics. After obtaining several Nail and Esthetic certifications, she was entrenched in the industry and kept up with her passion.  In parallel, her love for people, building relationships and helping others achieve professional success geared her towards a Human Resources career.  This enabled her to climb the corporate ladder and hold senior leadership roles within several Fortune 500 organizations.  She eventually left the corporate world to build the Vixen® Empire, grow her corporate locations to 40+ employees and Franchise the Business.

In addition, Karen and the Vixen® organization believes in giving back in a big way not just through nails and hair.  Whether it was gathering donations for the Halton Women’s Shelter, helping wrap gifts during the holiday season for Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, building houses for Habitat for Humanity or hosting a fundraising event for the Leukemia Foundation and the Canadian Breast Cancer Society, Karen and her team are always finding ways to show their love and support for the communities they serve in.

Karen eventually combined the experience she had in retail, leadership, esthetics, operations and Human Resources over the last 20+ years and built a thriving business.  In an extremely competitive market, Vixen® was born.  When asked why “Vixen” Karen tells us that the word Vixen is reminiscent of ‘Sexy and Confident’.  Evidently, the word Vixen means female fox and Karen felt it was symbolic of her goals in building a brand that the public would relate and be attracted to.   Since then, the name Vixen® has been the talk of the town in households, offices and funny enough in neighbourhood parks, ironically where it all began for her as a child.  It’s now known as the go-to place to feel sexy and beautiful inside and out.   She wanted to have a direct impact in the community around her and for everyone to experience the Vixen® Difference, ultimately making the impossible, possible.

Spring is here and its time to remove the winter fuzz build up.  The winter season may have left you with a little extra hair in the wrong places!  The worst thing you want is for the unsightly hairs to reveal themselves and surprise everyone.  Now is the perfect time to get your waxing routine in order.  Here are some waxing tips for smooth spring skin.

1. Get a head start – Prepare for the summer by starting a regular waxing cycle and continue it year round.  With regular waxing, you can lengthen the time in between your treatments; the more you wax, the weaker the hair follicle becomes, making it easier to remove. If you are new to waxing and want to make it last, schedule a “Touch Up” service to help you transition your hair-growth pattern from shaving to waxing. To maintain your smooth skin, you can continue touch up treatments every four weeks.
2. Exfoliate, Exfoliate – Body scrubs or body brushes are the perfect way to shed your winter skin and prepare for your wax.  The day before you decide to wax, exfoliate in the shower. This will remove dead skin, allowing the wax to grip shorter hairs.
3. Let it grow a little – Let your hair grow out about one-eighth to one-quarter of an inch before going in for waxing.
4. Moisturize – Daily moisturizing is necessary to keep your skin soft in between waxes.  Moisturize from the inside as well, drink a lot of water to plump up the skin to allow the hair to be removed from the follicle easily and prevent breakage of the hair at skin level.
5. Protection – Using sun protection is recommended when exposing your skin to the sun and is especially important during the first 24 hours post-waxing in order to avoid redness.
6. Cautious Tanning –  No tanning 24 hours before or after your wax to avoid irritation. If you plan on getting a spray tan, make sure you do it the day after your wax.
7. Perfect Your Timing – Going on a vacation or a specific outing and you want to look your best?  We recommend waxing two days before your trip for best results.
8. The last and most important tip – Choose the right place to get your waxing done!  Vixen® locations are dedicated and committed to providing the most comfortable and hygienic experience your safety is first.

Although, your whole body deserves special care during the harsh winter months, your hands require extra special treatment to keep them healthy.  Your hands are one of the most exposed and used parts of the body.  Direct exposure to water, sunrays and chemicals that exist in soaps, dish-cleaners and detergents also takes a toll on hands not to mention the hundreds of things we touch unconsciously daily, your hands respond by becoming dry and lifeless very quickly.

Soft and beautiful hands add the charm in an individual’s personality, while dull and unappealing hands demote it.

Here are some tips to keep your hands beautiful and sexy during the winter season – Like a Vixen®

1. Regular Manicures
   Show your hands some love on a regular basis and they will reward you with a healthier and beautiful look. Little things like well-shaped nails and hydrated cuticles not only look good but protect your hands in the harsh winter
2. Wear gloves every time you go outside
   The frosty air and cold winds can dry out hands. The easiest way to protect your hands is to wear gloves. Keep a few pairs of gloves, in your car, by the front door, etc. so you always have a pair handy.
3. Invest in some good hand cream or moisturizer
   Even if you have normal or oily skin you should go for the moisturizer that is for dry skin. That will take care of dryness and simultaneously prepare your hands for colder conditions, because you never know when the temperature is going to plummet. We have a variety of hand care products online and at the spa.
4. Don’t use hot water to wash your hands
   Hot water soaks all the moisture and makes hands dry and dull, so go for luke-warm water rather hot water
5. Stay hydrated
   Moisturizers alone cannot help in protecting your hands from dryness so you need to drink lots of water to keep your body hydrated. Drink 3 – 4 litres a day is ideal
6. Use rubber gloves when doing housework
   Housework isn’t just done in the winter so this tip is really for all seasons. Use gloves when cleaning with chemicals and washing dishes. Overexposure to hot water and chemicals can strip your skin of its natural oils making them look dry and chapped.
7. Add humidity to your home
   Using a humidifier or simply putting a bowl of water near your heaters can add moisture to the air in your house. Your skin will thank you!

Shellac Alert!

As Shellac manicures become more popular, so do knock-off products and shady application techniques.  It’s not unusual now to hear that someone’s gone in for a Shellac gel manicure only to find out later that what’s on their nails isn’t Shellac, or any reputable gel for that matter.

The above brands are examples of Shellac impostors. The issue with fake Shellac is that some salons try to cut corners by using cheap copy-cat products and equipment that haven’t been purchased from the authorised distributors but still advertise their treatments as genuine CND Shellac.

Some clients tell us that they have had Shellac before but had problems such as it not lasting beyond a couple of days, the colour faded, it took half an hour to remove or it left their natural nails damaged.

To help consumers avoid nail damage and the risk of having weird chemicals affixed to their nails, CND Shellac has come out with its own salon certification system, and we’ve assembled tips for discerning whether your salon uses authentic application and removal methods. See the guidelines below.

1. Filing or Drilling is a huge red flag
No one should ever abrade your nails while applying or removing gel polish.  If they pull out a file, scissors, drill or any other cutting tool, you should get out of there immediately.

2.  Look for labels
Ask to see the gel colours your salon has available and look at the labels. If the polish bottle does not say CND Shellac, it’s not the real thing, which means they are compromising your service with polishes that have unknown components that have sub par results, just say no.

3. One brand should rule them all
Don’t let anyone mix systems on you, so if someone just used a Shellac base coat on you, they shouldn’t try to put some other brand polish on over it.  They aren’t meant to be used together, and it’s not clear what the effects on quality and removal might be.

4. Gels don’t “soak off”
When you’re having your gels removed, your esthetician should never try to soak your hands in a bowl of acetone. Gel polish comes off with specific gel remover wraps or by using acetone-dipped cotton balls and tin foil to wrap nails. It’s gentler and it’s what gel-trained esthetician know they’re supposed to do.

5. Seek out the seal
If you’re on the hunt for Shellac, look for the CND seal of approval on the window of your salon. CND actually sends brand ambassadors to salons to ensure that they’re using the right methods.
